More About Al's Woodturning Creations

I started woodworking as a teenager with a hobby of aeromodelling.  Then in the mid 1970’s making basic furniture and toys for my children which continued for many years.  The majority of the timber I had access too was in boards or slabs and so as the kids turned into adults I looked for something else to ‘play with wood’ and started making wood cars of plans I purchased.

My father-in-law had a basic wood lathe and in the 1990’s I started using that.  Since then I now have my own lathe and small workshop at home and since I still had timber in boards and slabs I started doing segmented turning where I cut small trapezoidal shaped of different timbers that are glued in rings to build up patterns.

Recently I added and extra median to some work using acrylic pen blanks (plastic with patterns 150mmx20mmx20mm) cut into segments.

I joined the Woodturning Society of Queensland in 2014 which is an excellent opportunity to learning and share with others in this craft.

Awards: I have received the following awards for my work:

  • Regularly received first place for my classic cars at the annual Wood Turners Society of Qld (WSQ)competition

  • First place level 1 Segmented section 2016, 2019 and 2020 WSQ competition

  • Max Morris Shield for highest score in any turned category 2016 and 2020 WSQ competition

  • People’s Choice 2013 for my Willy Willy bowl and 2019 for Field of Pansies

  • For the Sunrise bowl in the 2020 WSQ competition received the Ray Hall Memorial Trophy – Awarded to the individual entry showing the greatest innovation in any facet of woodturning and the Ben Flack Memorial Trophy - Awarded to the individual entry gaining the highest points at any level in the category for turning incorporating other work.
